One Day at a Time: Manny Farber and Termite Art

By Helen Molesworth and Gregg Bordowitz. Contributions by Glenn Ligon, Sue Schardt and Jason Simon.

Published on the occasion of the exhibition One Day at a Time: Manny Farber and Termite Art, MOCA, Los Angeles, October 14, 2018–March 11, 2019.

One Day at a Time explores Farber's concept of "Termite Art" and argues for the vital importance of art drawn from the everyday. Born from observing and acknowledging the transitory nature of daily life, "Termite Art" is the key antidote to "White Elephant" art - big "masterpiece" works consciously striving for greatness. In this catalogue, artists, historians and critics dive into art that omits such ambition in an effort to tend to the pleasures and problems of the everyday.

The catalog features four contemporary commissioned artists' projects that exemplify "Termite Art," an interview with filmmaker Jean-Pierre Gorin, carefully selected collection of historical essays by and about Farber, and concludes with an essay by Helen Molesworth.
